Chinese antique ancestral portraits on rice paper with new
silk matting
Dynasties of Asia is proud to offer this unique
set of rare ancestral portraits, dated mid Q'ing Dynasty,
approximately 175-200 years old.
This pair of portraits on rice
paper has been professionally restored from its original and
deteriorated cotton matting, and carefully placed on a
new and heavy cotton paper matting with silk border.
Portraits, such as these watercolor originals
were commissioned when the male figure was promoted to higher
political office.
In this particular case, the male figure was promoted as a
bureaucrat or courtier. The coat, known as pufu was embroidered
with a mandarin square, and in the square field of the coat is a
paradise flycatcher. This is indicative of a bureaucrat of
the ninth rank.
The female portrait, who was likely the wife of
the bureaucrat reveals a Mancu style hairdressing, which is
typical of that era's rendering.
What is unique about the female portrait is the
onlay of thick pearl-like paint on the hairdressing, to give the
impression of silver and semi-precious stones.
This pair of
portraits require special art handling and will be rolled and
shipped in waterproof tubes. This set of Q'ing Dynasty ancestral
portraits are quite worthy of investment. |
